1971년 영국 글램 록 최고의 스타인 브라이언 슬레이드(Brian Slade: 조나단 라이 메이어스)가
공연무대에서 총을 맞고 쓰러지는 사건이 발생한다.
후에 브라이언이 연출한 가짜 암살극임이 매스컴에 밝혀지고 그는 사람들에게서 잊혀진다.
10년후 뉴욕 해럴드 기자 아서 스튜어트(Arthur Stuart: 크리스틴 베일 분)는
브라이언 암살사건을 취재하라는 편집장의 지시로 영국으로 건너간다.
한때 브라이언의 부인이었고 지금은 캬바레에서 일하는
맨디(Mandy Slade: 토니 콜렛 분)와 매니저를 만나면서
아서는 소년시절 브라이언의 열렬한 팬이었던 자신의 과거를 회상하게 된다.
브라이언의 여장 취미를 흉내내고 몰래 공연장을 드나들던 아서의 기억 속으로
또 하나의 우상이었던 락커, 커트 와일드(Curt Wild: 이완 맥그리거 분)가 떠오른다.
미국인 록커이자 브라이언의 사랑을 한 몸에 받던 커트 와일드 또한
지금은 사람들에게 잊혀진 채로 브라이언의 행방조차도 모르는 상태.
아서는 취재가 계속될 수록 혼란에 빠지게 되는데...

벨벳 골드마인은 어떤 면에서 70년대의 글램록을 추억하는 영화라고 할 수 있다.
글램 록이라면...글래머러스 록(Glamorous Rock)의 줄임말로. 말 그대로 선정적이며 매혹적인 록음악이다.
