      "좋은 소식도 있습니다. 북한 핵무기가 하나 줄어들었습니다!" 

   I have got some good news and bad news for you tonight. The bad news first: North Korea tested its first nuclear bomb. The good news is North Korea has one less bomb.

   오늘 밤 여러분들에게 드릴 좋은 소식도 있고 나쁜 소식도 있습니다. 나쁜 소식을 먼저 말씀드리면, 북한이 첫 핵실험을 했다는 것이고요, 좋은 소식은 북한의 핵폭탄이 하나 줄어들었다는 것입니다. (Comedy Central 방송 커미디언 Jon Stewart)

   When North Korea announced that it had successfully tested its first nuclear device, the U.S. government could not confirm it. But now they say that the North Koreans did test a nuclear bomb, but it's only a very small one ― even smaller than the one we dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Now our government is not sure whether Kim Jong Il, an arden movie buff, detonated it to shoot a war movie or to threaten us. 

   북한이 처음으로 성공적으로 핵실험을 했다고 발표을 때 우리 정부는 그 사실을 확인할수 없다고 했습니다. 그런데 지금은 북한이 핵폭탄을 실험하긴 했지만, 매우 작은 것이었다고 말하고 있습니다. 1945년 히로시마에 떨어뜨린 것보다도 작은 것이라고 합니다.

그래서 대단한 영화광인 김정일이 전쟁 영화를 찍기 위해 핵폭탄을 터뜨렸는지 우리를 위협하기 위해 그랬는지 우리 정부도 잘 모르겠다고 합니다. (한 레이디오 커미디언의 조오크) 

   There's now concern North Korea is about to set off a second nuclear bomb. Experts say the second bomb is twice as powerful as the first one, which means it could blow up two mail boxes.

   북한이 2차 핵실험을 단행할지 모른다고 우려하고 있습니다. 전문가들에 의하면 두 번째 핵폭탄은 첫 번째 것보다 두 배나 강력해서 우편함 2개는 폭파할수 있을 것이라 합니다. (NBC-TV Tonight Show 진행자 Jay Leno)

   In a press conference this morning, President Bush said that he has no intentions of attacking North Korea. Then Bush said, “However, I can't speak for Donald Rumsfeld."

   오늘 아침 붓쉬 대통령은 북한을 침공할 생각은 없다고 말했습니다. 그러나 그는 람즙휄드 국방장관 생각은 어떤지 모르겠다”고 말했습니다.(NBC-TV 커미디언 코넌 오브라이언)

   Democrats attacked President Bush for his North Korean policy. And Bush said, “The dems are wrong. I don't even have a North Korean policy!"

   민주당은 붓쉬 대통령의 북한 정책을 비난했습니다. 그러자 붓쉬는 “민주당 사람들 말은 틀렸습니다. 나는 북한 정책이란 것 자체를 가지고 있지 않다구요!” (레노)

   This past week ABC's Dianne Sawyer visited North Korea. Yesterday, reporting live from Pyongyang, she said that North Korea is so short of electricity that the whole country switches off at 9 o'clock every night. In fact that serves two purposes: Save energy and increase population, according to North Korea experts.

   지난 한주 동안 ABC-TV (굿모닝 아메리카 프로 진행자) 다이앤 쏘오여는 북한을 방문했습니다. 어제 그녀는 평양에서 생방송을 하면서 북한은 전력이 너무 부족해서 밤 9시면 전국이 불을 끈다고 보도했습니다. 그것에는 실제로 두 가지 목적이 있다고 합니다. 하나는 에너지 절약이고 다른 하나는 인구 증가가 목적이라고 북한문제 전문가들은 말하고 있습니다. (CBS-TV Late Show 진행자 David Letterman)

   According to a Kim Jong-Il biography, he has been accused of dishonesty, drunkenness and sexual excess. So if he lived here, he could be in Congress.

   한 김정일 전기(傳記)에 의하면 김정일은 정직하지 못하고 술을 좋아하고 여자를 밝힌다는 비난을 받아왔다 합니다. 그가 미국에 살았다면 국회의원이 될 인물입니다. (레터맨)

   As of October 17, the population of the United States has reached 300 million people. It took only 39 years for it to get another 100 million. This is either attributed to poor quality of American-made condoms or weak border control.

  10월 17일 현재 미국 인구는 3억명이 되었습니다. 인구 1억명이 증가하는데 겨우 39년이 걸렸을 분입니다. 이는 미국제 콘돔의 질이 불량하거나 국경 경비가 소흘한 탓일 것입니다.  (레노)

   The U.S. population hit 300 million people yesterday. And the population of Mexico is now down to 38 people.

   어제 우리나라 인구는 3억이 되었습니다. 그리고 멕시코 인구는 38명으로 줄었습니다. (레노 / 멕시코에서 불법입국자가 많이 넘어온다는 것을 과장한 조오크)

   Bill Clinton says he is opposed to abolishing the estate tax. The former president says that some people think he should leave all his money to his daughter when he's gone, but he doesn't think he should. He says he should spend it on other people's daughters when he's still alive.

   빌 클린턴 전 대통령은 상속세 폐지를 반대한다고 말했습니다. 그는 자기가 전 재산을 자기 딸에게 남기고 떠나야한다고는 생각하지 않는다고 말했습니다. 그는 자기가 살아있는 동안 다른 사람들의 딸들을 위해서도 돈을 써야한다고 말했습니다. (레노)  

   According to the latest poll about the 2008 election, many voters consider Hillary Clinton as their second or even third choice. After hearing this, Bill Clinton said, “I feel the same way."

   2008년 대선에 대한 최근 여론조사에 의하면, 힐러리 클린턴을 두 번째 또는 세 번째로 선호하는 유권자들이 많다고 합니다. 이 소리를 들은 빌 클린턴은 이렇게 말했습니다. “나도 같은 생각입니다.” (오브라이언 / 클린턴도 자기 부인을 여자로서는 두 번째 또는 세 번째로 좋아할 뿐이이라는 조오크)

   Sources close to John Kerry say they think he's running for president again in 2008. Kerry must be serious, because they say he's already practicing his concession speech.

   존 케리 측근들은 케리가 2008년 대선에 또 출마할 것이라고 합니다. 그들 말에 의하면 그가 벌써 패배 시인 연설까지 연습하고 있다고 하니까 케리의 재출마 의사는 분명해 보입니다.(오브라이언)
