사도행전 21장 1절에 언급되고 있는 고스 섬은 터키의 밀레도 항구에서 남쪽으로 68㎞ 거리에 있는 비옥한 작은 섬이다. 3만여명이 사는 작은 이 섬은 바울 사도가 3차 전도여행을 마치고 예루살렘으로 귀환하는 도중 일박하고 이튿날 로도 섬으로 향한 곳이다(행 21:1). 로마 제국이 통치할 때는 자치도시였으며 클라우디우스 황제 때에는 주치의인 고안의 간언에 따라 모든 세금을 면제해주었다. 로마가 멸망한 뒤에는 오스만제국과 이탈리아의 지배를 받아오다가 1947년 그리스령이 되었다. 오늘날 섬 사람들은 대부분 중심도시인 고스시에 살고 있으며 섬 중앙에는 해발875m의 오로메돈 산이 있다. 지중해성 기후인 이곳은 옛날에는 고운 직물과 포도주가 명물이었으나 오늘날에는 어업은 물론 밀 감귤류 포도 채소류가 많이 생산되고 있다. 특히 작은 섬임에도 불구하고 구리와 철 등 광산물도 많이 나오고 있다.  항구 옆에는 바울 도착을 기념하는 그리스정교회가 있다.

섬 서쪽에는 의술의 신 아스클레피오스 신전 유적이 있다. 아스클레피오스 유적은 언덕 위에 위치해 있는데  왼쪽에 대신전터임을 보여주는 7개의 기둥이 서 있고 오른쪽에는 2개의 기둥이 남아 있는 또 다른 작은 신전터가 있다. 다시 계단을 오르면 아폴론 신전의 제단이 아직도 남아 있다.
